Typing Unicode Telugu using Apple Keyboard Layout

Apple layout is the second most famous layout on non-Unicode Telugu generation applications. Using the MSKLC, I created Telugu Apple Keyboard Layout for Windows. By using this, you can type in Unicode Telugu wherever you can type in English.

Instructions and notes about using Apple Keyboard Layout follows.

Instructions:

  1. Download the Apple Telugu Keyboard Layout.
  2. Unzip the downloaded zip file.
  3. Execute the Setup.exe file in te_apple folder
  4. After the installation is complete, you can switch to the Apple Keyboard Layout by pressing Left Alt + Shift. (If you are using multiple Telugu keyboard layouts, please ensure that you really selected Apple Keyboard Layout.) Pressing again the same keyboard shortcut brings you back to the English.
  5. If you want to see an indication of which layout is in use, you can enable Language Bar in Windows.

NOTES

There are some differences with the original Apple Layout, which you should be aware of.

  1. You should use Shift + key to get the vowel characters for all the keys in QWERTY row.
    • Example:To get అ, type Shift + q; ఈ = Shift + w
  2. You can get the Shifted versions of those keys, by holding Right Alt key while pressing the respective key. (You can use Alt Gr key also for Right Alt.)
    • Example: ఋ = Right Alt + w;ృ = Right Alt + Shift + w
  3. For joining (&), you can use h and H.
  4. In joinings, you should give the vowel last, instead of before ‘&’ in the original Apple layout.
    • Example:డ్లీ = chaW (instead of cwha)

    If you are to learn apple keyboard now, that’s not the best way. Learn Inscript.

    You would want to learn apple keyboard only if u want to work on DTP stuff. If you want to write on the web (in emails and websites), you need to use Unicode. Unicode can be typed in many ways. The better way is inscript. (You can learn it with Palaka.) The Apple layout tool I mentioned in the post is helpful only if you already knew apple keyboard.

    I myself do not know apple keyboard. You can buy Anu Script Manager, that comes with the Apple Layout. You can see and learn.

  7. Can’t you make a real telugu apple keyboard using MSKLC or any other tool? If its possible many people would be grateful to you a lot.

    Making a real apple keyboard layout is impossible in MSKLC. Because, in a keyboard layout one key is for one character. Strictly speaking Apple layout is not a keyboard layout. It’s a software-assisted input method. Apple layout uses, in case of vowels, same key for a vowel and as well as for a letter. The software (Anu Script Manager, etc) decides whether it’s a vowel or a letter depending on the previous character.
